Reno, NV.  Stacey Spain directs Tennessee Williams Orpheus Descending at Brüka Theatre on the centennial year of the author’s birth and as part of the 16^th annual Artown festival. This is Williams’ take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as set in the South, the perfect American equivalent for emotional repression and alienation.  First produced in 1940 as the Battle of Angels, it was his ultimate ode to his youth and took him four produced versions and 17 years to complete.  It is the modern telling of Orpheus who descended into hell to rescue his wife Eurydice, a journey doomed to failure. Williams' concept of hell is a small Southern town infested with gossip, hypocrisy and racism. But beneath the surface it is a play about unanswered questions that haunt the hearts of the characters. Repression, passion and sacrifice are themes Williams worked with in many of his better-known plays - this play explores the themes with courage and conviction.

Orpheus Descending, during the month of July, is part of the 16th  annual Artown festival, July 2011. The month-long summer arts festival features more than 400 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide, with major funding provided by the City of Reno.

Reno, NV.  Sandra Brunell Neace directs How I Learned To Drive written by Paula Vogel who won the Pulitzer Prize for this play. This wildly funny, surprising and devastating tale of survival is seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man. How I Learned to Drive is noteworthy for the many awards that it has won, including the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for drama. The play enjoyed an off-Broadway revival this year in New York. Neace adapted The Medea Project for the Brüka stage last season.  Strong language.  Suggested for mature audiences only.  (Ages 18 and over).

Reno, NV.  Brüka Theatre presents The God Of Carnage, written by Yasmina Reza and adapted by Christopher Hampton.  Tony DeGeiso directs this wickedly funny play that asks what happens when two sets of parents meet up to deal with the unruly behavior of their children? A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime?   This Tony award winning 90-minute dark comedy enjoyed a successful run on Broadway in 2009 – 2010 and enjoys its Nevada debut at Brüka Theatre.  Described as a comedy of manners without manners, The God Of Carnage features actors Bradford Ka’ai’ai, Kristin Moffitt, Gary Cremeans and Mary Bennett behaving badly in bad circumstances. Strong language.  Suggested for mature audiences only.  (Ages 15 and over).

Reno, NV.  Brüka Theatre presents The Wild Party, a jazz tinged musical based on the boozy, violent, narrative poem about a 1920s party written in 1928 by Joseph Moncure March.  The Wild Party, with parallels to our world today – our politics, our social issues and our culture is a rowdy, decadent musical that tells the story of Queenie and Burrs, a vaudeville couple whose relationship is marked by vicious behavior and recklessness, mirroring the times in which they live. They decide to throw a party to end all parties, inviting an assortment of people living on the edge for one wild evening in their Manhattan apartment. As the party plays out, relationships are forged and torn apart, and it ultimately becomes the greatest night they'll ever regret. The Wild Party is a musical morality tale about the consequences of actions in an age of unreason.  Sexual situations & language.  Suggested for mature audiences only.  (Ages 17 and over).
